Descrition
Historic architecture surveys are vital tools for preserving the cultural identity of Iowa’s small towns. This presentation explores how these surveys document and evaluates historic structures, inform local planning decisions, and support economic revitalization through heritage tourism and preservation incentives. Drawing on recent projects across Iowa, including work led by Eocene Environmental Group, the session will highlight best practices in field documentation, community engagement, and coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Attendees will learn how surveys contribute to National Register nominations, Certified Site applications, and adaptive reuse planning. Special attention will be given to how surveys uncover stories embedded in built environments—connecting residents to their past while shaping future development. Whether you're a planner, preservationist, or community advocate, this session offers practical insights into how historic architecture surveys can serve as a foundation for sustainable, place-based planning.
