Mobile Workshop: Outreach on Wheels


Description

Attendees can explore several mobile outreach vehicles on-site including the Bettendorf Public Library’s new outreach vehicle, the Family Museum outreach vehicle, STEAM on Wheels, a non-profit partner of the Family Museum, and the Quad City Botanical Center’s Plant Discovery Bus! Staff will provide pop-up programs such as 3-D printed fidgets, thaumatropes, and you can even plant your own parlor palm plant to take home.

Glenn Boyles

Title: Education Coordinator

Bio: Glenn Boyles serves as the Education Coordinator at the Family Museum, where he has dedicated 36 years to inspiring creativity and curiosity in children and families. He currently oversees Outreach Programming, hands-on workshops, and the Museum’s Imagination Studio, ensuring dynamic and engaging learning experiences for visitors of all ages.

With a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, Glenn has taught a variety of drawing and clay classes throughout his tenure. His strong science background also contributes to his work, including a decade of leading the Museum’s Inventor’s Club, an after‑school program focused on innovation and exploration.

Outside of the Museum, Glenn enjoys drawing, painting, building model airplanes and trains, and spending quality time with his family.

Sam McCullum

Bio: Samuel McCullum is the founder and executive director of STEAM on Wheels, a nonprofit providing hands-on STEAM programs to K–12 students throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding communities. Since 2018, he has expanded access to robotics, coding, advanced manufacturing, and career exploration for underserved youth.

Samuel holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology and a master’s degree in Community and Economic Development from Western Illinois University. He also serves as a board member of Quad City Arts and the Azubuike African American Council for the Arts, and as a member of the Clean River Advisory Council.

Heather Ballou

Title: Director of Education

Bio: Heather Ballou serves as the Director of Education at the Quad Cities Botanical Center (QCBC). During her more than 15 years in the environmental and informal education fields, Heather has facilitated wonder and discovery of the natural world with a multitude of learners throughout the Quad Cities area and beyond. One of the keystone projects of her career is QCBC’s latest outreach vehicle, the Plant Discovery Bus. A creative approach to a real-world problem, the Plant Discovery Bus provides a one-of-a-kind learning experience to local K-12 students onsite at their schools.

Katie Jackson

Title: Young Adult Librarian

Bio: Katie earned her MLIS from the University of Iowa in 2023 and joined the Bettendorf Public Library as the Young Adult Librarian two years ago. Her role includes school outreach, teen programming, and maintaining the young adult collection. Katie's previous work in mental healthcare inspired her to get involved in the community through librarianship five years ago, and she's loved it ever since! She is excited to continue engaging and inspiring the teens throughout Bettendorf.

Teresa Freking

Title: Library Clerk in Programming and Public Services

Bio: Teresa joined the Bettendorf Public Library in January as a Library Clerk in Programming and Public Services. In this role, she helps support library programs and outreach initiatives, including regular service on the BettConnect outreach van. A retired educator with experience in both K–12 and higher education, Teresa brings a strong commitment to community engagement and lifelong learning. She is excited to contribute to the Library’s expanding outreach services and connect with residents throughout the Bettendorf community.
