America 250
Resources for Iowa Cities
In 2026, the United States will celebrate its 250th anniversary. America 250 is an opportunity for Iowa cities to highlight local history, build community pride, and create meaningful ways for residents to connect with their city and our nation’s story.
There is no single way to participate. Cities of all sizes are encouraged to celebrate in ways that fit their community, capacity, and culture. The Iowa League of Cities is here to help by providing simple, ready-to-use resources and connections to statewide efforts.
League Provided Resources
America 250 Coloring Sheet
The Iowa League of Cities has created a fun coloring sheet that cities can easily incorporate into local activities. This resource is designed to be flexible and low-cost, making it perfect for communities of any size.
Ideas for using the coloring sheet include:
- Sharing it with your local library
- Hosting a coloring contest
- Making it available at city events, city hall, or festivals
- Including it in community newsletters
It’s a simple way to engage younger residents while celebrating a major milestone in our nation’s history.
Red, White & Win!
In honor of America 250, the League is inviting cities to participate in the Best Decorated Patriotic City Hall/City Building Contest.
Decorate your city hall or another city-owned building, snap a photo, and submit it by June 29 to communications@iowaleague.org. Cities are encouraged to get creative and involve staff, volunteers, or community members in the decorating process.
The winning city will receive:
- A feature article in Cityscape
- Recognition at the League’s Annual Conference & Exhibit
- Ice cream sandwiches for city staff
It’s a fun way to show civic pride, celebrate America 250, and bring a little friendly competition to the celebration.
Statewide America 250 Efforts
Iowa America 250 Task Force
The Governor’s Office has established the Iowa America 250 Task Force to coordinate statewide celebrations. The Iowa League of Cities is actively involved in this effort and encourages cities to connect with and participate in statewide initiatives.
Share and Find Events
Cities are encouraged to share their America 250 events and explore what other Iowa communities are planning. Submitting your event helps build a statewide calendar and increases visibility for local celebrations.
