Community Champions Award

Eligibility

Individuals and community groups that have shown initiative in working with their city to develop programs, services and amenities that are beneficial to their community and improve the lives of the residents.

Criteria

The emphasis for award selection is on impactful and meaningful service that fosters community well-being in their city. This can include volunteering efforts or spearheading collaborative initiatives with the city and other groups that meet the needs of their community.

Nomination and Selection Process

Community members or city officials are invited to nominate qualified candidates. Along with the nomination form, please include a letter of support. The letter of support should discuss the following aspects of the applicant’s work to assist their city.

  • The contributions that ensured the success of the program, service or amenity.
  • Special leadership qualities, including the ability to inspire and encourage support.
  • Any extraordinary efforts made by the nominee and the challenges and obstacles that were overcome to make these contributions.

The nominations are submitted to the League Executive Board for ratification.

Entry Deadline

Nominations can be submitted at any time with award considerations being approved and recognized year-around.

Ellie Wagoner, City of AltoonaFor her work with the City of Altoona to plan and build a splash pad at Haines Park. She began her campaign with a letter to her mayor and donated the first dollar to the project. Over several years of letter-writing and support, the City of Altoona completed the new splash pad in 2023, providing a fantastic amenity for residents and visitors.
Mayors Youth Advisory Council, City of Red OakWith their creation of the Youth Day of Service, these young residents of Red Oak have worked with the City to showcase youth-led initiatives and better connect youth with city projects. The Youth Advisory Council has worked year-round to make their voices heard on a city level and to advocate on behalf of their peers on key issues.
